Scope, Content, Abstract:

Brethren House Ministries was begun in 1967 by the Missionary Board of the Brethren Church.  The ministry emphasizes the importance of understanding the message of the Bible and the importance of taking children seriously.  In team ministry, Phil Lersch (ordained Brethren minister), Jean Lersch (public school teacher), and Bonnie Munson (certified exceptional education), responded to the needs of neighborhood children in St. Petersburg, Florida.   Nurture of individuals is emphasized in Sunday morning and after-school sessions through Bible-teaching activities in an open-classroom setting.  The Brethren House team published a bi-monthly newsletter and conducts workshops for various denominations in many states.

From 1967 to 1997 Brethren House Ministries marketed a series of resource materials which were designed, written, produced and distributed through their ministry in St. Petersburg.  In 1967 the Missionary Board of the Brethren Church asked Phil and Jean Lersch to begin a new Brethren Church in the St. Petersburg area.  Brethren House was located at 6329 56th Avenue in St. Petersburg.  The ministry was built on two ideas. First, belief in the importance of understanding the message and the Bible, and second, belief in the importance of taking children seriously.
